Model Overview and Naming Evolution

"BAIC Zhixing" is the collective product moniker for the compact smart SUV line-up introduced between 2018 and 2019 by the Beijing brand under BAIC Group (BAIC). Its naming convention underwent several transitions, which are key to understanding the model's history. The Zhixing first officially debuted on 21 September 2018 as the "BAIC Senova Zhixing", offering a total of six variants with an official recommended retail price ranging from RM79,900 to RM119,900. Serving as the flagship opening model for Beijing Auto's 2.0 era and the first production vehicle under BAIC's mid-to-high-end development strategy, the Zhixing was marketed as the "AI Era SUV", placing artificial intelligence technology at its core.

At the Chengdu International Auto Show in September 2018, BAIC Senova officially rebranded the all-new generation X55 as the "Zhixing", kickstarting an independent naming sequence for the model line. BAIC subsequently introduced the Zhida X3, a B-segment SUV spun off the Zhixing platform, which was later rebadged as the BEIJING-X3 (Beijing X3). Concurrently, BAIC also rolled out a sedan derivative under the Zhixing umbrella—the BEIJING-U5 (Beijing U5). Measuring 4,660 mm long, 1,820 mm wide, and 1,480 mm tall with a 2,670 mm wheelbase, the sedan was powered by a 1.5L naturally aspirated or 1.5T turbocharged engine, equipped with a dual-screen setup comprising a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 360-degree camera system, and carried an official price tag of RM69,900 to RM100,900. As such, the "Zhixing" nameplate encompassed both SUV and sedan product lines within BAIC's portfolio.

Design Language (Senova Zhixing Version)

The Senova Zhixing adopted Beijing Auto's latest OFFSPACE family design language, boasting a sporty and stylish overall aesthetic. Up front, a prominent hexagonal radiator grille flanked by chrome trim serves as the visual centerpiece. Aside from the entry-level variant, full LED headlights come fitted on all trims, while LED daytime running lights (DRLs) are standard across the board. The side profile features sharp, muscular body lines complemented by a floating roof design to elevate its modern appeal. At the rear, a full-width chrome garnish bridges both tail lamps, flanked by dual exhaust garnishes for a well-defined look. Dimension-wise, the Senova Zhixing measures 4,480 mm long, 1,837 mm wide, and 1,680 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,665 mm, slotting it squarely into the C-segment SUV bracket. The post-2021 BEIJING-X3 (formerly Zhida X3) retained this design DNA but adopted more compact dimensions at 4,325 mm long, 1,830 mm wide, 1,640 mm tall, and a 2,570 mm wheelbase, catering instead to the B-segment SUV market.

Powertrain and Performance

The entire Senova Zhixing range is powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine churning out 110 kW (around 150 PS) and 210 Nm of torque. Transmission duties are handled by either a 6-speed manual (6MT) or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with simulated manual mode, driving the front wheels across all variants. The official 0-100 km/h sprint is clocked at 10.84 seconds. On the fuel economy front, the MIIT rated combined fuel consumption stands at 6.9 to 7.3 L/100 km (varying slightly by transmission). The vehicle runs on RON 92 petrol and meets China V and China VI emission standards. Later versions of the Zhida X3 also adopted the 1.5T mill paired with either 6MT or CVT options before being unified under the BEIJING-X3 nameplate, retailing between RM59,900 and RM87,900. Notably, early iterations of the Zhida X3 offered a 1.5L naturally aspirated unit (85 kW / 146 Nm), though the lineup eventually standardized on the 1.5T turbo powertrain.

Chassis and Handling

A headline technical highlight of the BAIC Zhixing lies in its chassis setup. Inheriting engineering DNA from SAAB's advanced chassis architecture, the Senova Zhixing features a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension arrangement, tuned by the renowned UK-based automotive engineering consultancy MIRA. Thanks to this underbody hardware, the Zhixing adeptly absorbs road bumps and undulations, ensuring commendable ride compliance across uneven road conditions.

Additionally, the Zhixing benefits from SAAB's proprietary ReAxs® passive rear-wheel steering technology. By incorporating tuned elastomeric rubber bushings between the rear axle and suspension mounts, the setup allows a controlled mechanical flex. Under lateral cornering loads, these bushings deflect slightly to produce 1 to 2.5 degrees of passive rear-wheel steer, sharpening turn-in tracking and reducing the turning circle. This feature was particularly rare for an SUV in the RM100,000 price bracket, serving as a standout selling point over rivals. Braking is handled by ventilated discs up front and solid discs at the rear, with an electronic parking brake (EPB) and Bosch ESP 9.1 electronic stability programme fitted as standard across the range. It utilizes an electric power steering (EPS) setup featuring speed-sensitive assistance—effortless at parking speeds and reassuringly weighted at highway speeds.

Cabin and Features

Smart cabin technology serves as one of the primary USPs of the Senova Zhixing. All variants come equipped with a 9-inch floating infotainment touchscreen, incorporating an AI full-time vehicle diagnostics monitor, smart voice command system, and online satellite navigation. Powered by iFLYTEK voice recognition tech, the system handles voice controls for media playback, navigation, and climate control. On top of that, convenience amenities include keyless entry with push-start button and dedicated rear air-conditioning vents. The Zhida X3/BEIJING-X3 took cabin tech further, introducing the world's first AI driving assistant alongside iFLYTEK's latest voice AI system supporting 202 discrete voice commands, plus a 360-degree high-definition surround-view camera powered by four 1-megapixel cameras offering 12 viewing angles and 5 display modes. Upholstery ranges from fabric on entry variants to synthetic leather on higher-spec grades, with USB port counts differing across the variant hierarchy.

Safety and Driver Assistance

In terms of active safety, the Senova Zhixing comes standard across the range with Bosch ESP 9.1 electronic stability programme, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), hill-start assist, and a reverse camera. Top-spec variants add lane departure warning (LDW), blind spot monitoring (BSM), and a 360-degree surround-view monitor. Passive safety is anchored by dual front airbags across the range, with higher trims gaining front side airbags (curtain airbags available on select specs). The chassis utilizes a high-tensile safety cage structure to preserve cabin structural integrity in a collision.

The Zhida X3/BEIJING-X3 bolstered its safety kit with the 9th-generation Bosch ESP, emergency stop signal (ESS), TPMS, and hill hold control (HHC) as standard equipment. Higher-spec models feature the 360-degree HD surround-view camera as standard. It also supports over-the-air (OTA) software updates to continuously refine the infotainment system. Higher trims of the BEIJING-U5 sedan likewise boast a 360-degree camera and cruise control. Notably, the Zhixing lineup lacks Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities (such as adaptive cruise control or autonomous emergency braking), capping its driver-assist suite at Level 1 functionality.

Market Performance and Reception

The market trajectory of the "BAIC Zhixing" family experienced a clear cycle of initial traction followed by gradual decline. In its early days, the Senova Zhixing captured market interest thanks to its SAAB chassis pedigree and AI smart cabin, priced aggressively between RM59,900 and RM119,900 to deliver strong value for money. In 2019, the Zhixing topped the "New Car Satisfaction for Market Attention" survey, establishing early positive sentiment among buyers. The Zhida X3 lowered the entry threshold even further to RM49,900, drawing in budget-conscious young buyers with its "standard 1.5T across the board" powertrain proposition. The updated BEIJING-X3 subsequently continued retail presence in the RM59,900 to RM87,900 bracket.

Nevertheless, BAIC's fragmented branding, frequent renaming, and the transitional phase of phasing out the Senova badge to consolidate under the unified "BEIJING" marque hampered long-term brand recall and customer loyalty. Consumer feedback was similarly mixed: praise centered around responsive turbocharged performance (the 1.5T was a major highlight in its price class), generous cabin space, rich smart connectivity, and reassuring handling courtesy of the SAAB-derived chassis. Conversely, criticisms pointed to high real-world fuel consumption (urban testing exceeding 10 L/100 km), firm ride damping, heavy steering weight, and cabin rattles/fit-and-finish complaints. Coupled with the rising market share of new energy vehicles (NEVs) and cut-throat market competition, lifecycle development for the petrol-powered Zhixing ground to a halt, leading to its gradual phase-out from mainstream showrooms around 2022 to 2023.

In summary, as the pioneering smart SUV of Beijing Auto's 2.0 generation, the BAIC Zhixing carved out a distinct niche in the RM70,000—RM120,000 compact SUV segment through its SAAB chassis roots, standard 1.5T powertrain, and AI-enabled smart cabin. It marked a pivotal transitional chapter for BAIC Senova from conventional manufacturing towards youthful, tech-oriented vehicles, standing as a notable product during the rapid expansion era of Chinese domestic SUVs. Although its run has concluded amidst the rapid EV transition, its "tech-for-market-share" product strategy in the RM100,000 petrol SUV space continues to shape BAIC's subsequent model development and target demographic positioning.
